The story is told by a series of dated extracts from letters, journals, diaries, and newspapers. To avoid making the extracts too small events are not covered precisely in the order in which they happened. Also, different things are happening in different places on the same dates. The result of both of these is that the dates of the various extracts overlap, and this is reflected here in the dates shown for the chapters.
